October 26, 2006 - press release

Crysoptix, KK. is proud to announce that after extensive R&D efforts it has successfully produced and tested a new type of coatable retarder material suitable for application in LCD manufacturing industry.

So far, manufacturing technology barriers have impeded the efforts to bring a commercial coatable retarder onto the market. However, now the new Crysoptix proprietary coatable Thin Birefringent Film (TBF™) retarder eliminates technological issues of the materials based on polymerisable liquid crystal with high melting point, which have been introduced previously by other companies.

The Crysoptix TBF™ coatable retarder has been produced and tested in a lab prototype of Vertical Alignment (VA) mode LCD. Measurements have shown that Crysoptix retarder provides cost efficient solution to the viewing enhancement problem in LCD screens. The thin form factor and the ability to coat on a variety of substrates give Crysoptix coatable retarders a great degree of design flexibility and advantages in LCD related applications.

Application of TBF™ retarder as an internal optical element allows LCD manufacturers to avoid the risks of delamination, bubbling and degradation that are typical during LCD manufacturing and exploitation under harsh environmental conditions for conventional external stretched polymer compensation sheets.

According to Alexander Lazarev, CEO of Crysoptix, KK., ”the new coatable TBF™ retarder will allow reducing the cost of retarder films by at least 20%, while providing optical performance the same or better than existing polymer based retarder films”.

Dr. Pavel Lazarev, Founder and Chairman of Crysoptix, KK., said: “It is very gratifying to see that over 10 years of development efforts in Cascade Crystallization Technology brought to existence a new class of coatable retarders. I trust that LCD industry will benefit from the cost reduction and performance enhancements brought by the new technology.”

Crysoptix, KK. is now in the process of scale-up production of the new coatable TBF™ retarder. The company expects to introduce to the market the first commercially available coatable retarder in Q4 of 2007.

Crysoptix, KK. is a manufacturing company created for commercializing Cascade Crystallization technology – producing materials for image enhancing optical films (namely retarders or optical compensation films) and brightness enhancing optical films, both of which are typically found in display, electronic, and optical systems. Crysoptix, KK. is a spin-off company, which is uniquely positioned to capitalize on experience and research accumulated in the course of nearly 20 years.
